Guidelines for authors and speakers

Thank you for your support and contribution to the Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories (UNITECR) 2023.

Please find below information specifically for authors (of scientific papers, “Short Communications” or posters) and speakers at the UNITECR conference.

THE CONGRESS PORTAL

In our congress portal you can view the detailed conference schedule and upload manuscripts starting in May 2023. Please use the login data sent to you by e-mail. If you have already registered and forgotten your password or if the account was an automatically generated account, please request a new password via the “Forgot password?” button.

In the case that you are unable to attend the conference and need to cancel your participation, please inform Ms. Nina Stabe at unitecr@mcon-mannheim.de.

I WILL GIVE A LECTURE

Please note that the invitation to give a lecture does not include your congress registration. The speaker is therefore kindly asked to register for the congress until 30th June 2023. You will not be able to give a lecture at UNITECR without having registered by 30th June 2023.

If you are invited to give a lecture during the UNITECR conference, you are at the same time invited to publish a scientific paper, either in the UNITECR conference proceedings book or in a special issue of the “Open Ceramics” peer-reviewed journal by Elsevier. This is mandatory.

You can choose whether you want to publish your scientific paper in the UNITECR conference proceedings book (PDF) or in a special refractories issue “Refractories for the Carbon Challenge” of the “Open Ceramics” scientific journal by Elsevier.

The deadline for the publication in the “Proceedings Book” and in the “Open Ceramics” is June 30th 2023.

Please, upload your manuscript for the Proceedings Book over the UNITECR conference system.
The manuscript for the Open Ceramics can be upload on the publisher’s website.

  • Do not number the pages in your paper. The maximum length is 4 pages. We will print your paper exactly as you provide it, only adding a page number and a reference to UNITECR 2023 in the top or bottom margin.
  • The paper will be published in the UNITECR conference proceedings book in PDF form, which will be made available to all participants of the UNITECR conference on the first day of the conference.
  • By submitting a paper to UNITECR, you declare that you own the copyright of the paper and of all parts of it (e.g. pictures, graphs). You also transfer the exclusive right for publication of your paper to ECREF gGmbH, which is the organizing body of UNITECR 2023, and to its licensees, its affiliates and its successors.

Publish in the “Open Ceramics” scientific journal by Elsevier

  • If you wish to publish your paper in a special refractories issue of “Open Ceramics”, please register your interest by E-Mail to unitecr@mcon-mannheim.de, stating the ID of your paper/lecture (to be found in the E-Mail that notified you that your paper/lecture has been accepted), by 30th March 2023.
  • Please be aware that a paper submitted to “Open Ceramics” needs to pass a peer-review process and may not be published by the time of the UNITECR conference, or not at all.
  • If you wish to publish your paper in “Open Ceramics”, you are required to submit an additional two-page abstract of this paper by 30th June 2023 at the latest, which will be printed as “Short Communication” in the UNITECR proceedings book. This is mandatory.
  • Please be aware that at least 70 % of your paper in “Open Ceramics” must be unique, so keep this two-page abstract short. Please use this template and upload your text as PDF file to the congress portal.
  • Lectures are 15 minutes long, followed by a 5-minute window to discuss your lecture and answer questions from the audience. You will be gently stopped after 15 minutes of speaking.
  • In May you will find in the congress portal the session in which you give your lecture, the other lectures of the session, as well as the chairs and other speakers involved in your session (once confirmed).
  • During your lecture, you will most probably want to show slides (a presentation). You have the following options to submit your presentation:

Upload your presentation in the congress portal (available until 18th September 2023)

  • You can upload your presentation via the congress portal until 18th September 2023. To ensure the desired functions and the correct layout of your presentation (especially animations or embedded videos), we ask you to check the presentation on site at the media desk (see below) once you arrived at the UNITECR conference.
  • After 18th September 2023, you can submit your presentation at the media desk at the conference venue (see below).

  • On site, you can hand in your presentation at the media desk, if possible on the day before you hold it. The monitor shows you the currently displayed slide, the following slide or the next animation or your notes in a small preview image. Please note that you have no direct influence on the font size of your notes at the lectern, so long texts might not be completely displayed. Please do not simply read your presentation from your notes.
  • The standard setup does not include a keyboard or mouse at the lectern. There is a hand-held presenter at the lectern for controlling your slides and starting videos.

With this format you can address a large audience in a short time and attract them to your work and to your poster in the poster area. The three short lectures that attract the most attention will receive a “Poster Award”. The Poster Slam will take place on the 27th September 2023 at 03:00 – 04:20 p.m..
